Posture Correctors

Braces, straps and trainers: what they actually do, and who they help.

A posture corrector is a cue, not a correction. The strap pulls the shoulders back and the wearer notices; nothing about the brace lengthens a tight pectoral or strengthens a weak lower trapezius, which is what actually holds a position once the strap is off. That is why the trials that find a benefit find it in the awareness measures rather than the strength ones, and why every credible manufacturer prints a wear-time ceiling somewhere in the manual. The questions that decide whether one is worth buying are unglamorous: how it sits under a shirt, whether the sizing chart measures the chest or the torso, how the elastic behaves after forty washes, and whether the seams sit where a bra strap already does. Those are the questions these guides answer.
